Avon Gains 154 New Voters During Extended Registration Post-Sandy

About 154 new people registered to vote in Avon on the two extended voter registration days following Hurricane Sandy last week.

"It literally pushed us back two days," Democratic Registrar Ann Clark said Friday.

If the Registrars of Voters Office had been open Oct. 29 and 30, the registrars would have already been printing lists and marking absentee ballots come Wednesday. Instead, they spent Friday doing that and also came in over the weekend.

When asked whether the extended voter registration deadline brought in more voters than it otherwise would have, Clark said, "It's hard to really tell."

"Certainly, the media brought people in," she said, regarding coverage of the extended deadline by multiple news outlets due to the storm.

Last year, the voter registration deadline was extended to the day before the municipal election because of the October snowstorm, Clark said.

In October alone this year, 538 brand new voters registered in Avon and 96 were removed from the list, Clark said.

As of Friday, this is how many registered voters there are in each of Avon's three voting districts.

Voting District 2, which is State Rep. Brian Becker's territory in the 19th District State House, has expanded by about 1,100 voters as a result of redistricting, Clark said. Becker, of West Hartford, is running against Farmington resident Jon Landry in the race to represent parts of Avon, Farmington and West Hartford.

Avon's first voting district would have been at about 6,200 if it weren't for the redistricting, Clark estimated.  Avon Voting Districts 1 and 3 will choose between State Rep. Tim LeGeyt, of Canton, and Avon Town Councilman David Peña on the ballot in the 17th State House District race to represent parts of Avon and Canton.
