Avon Girls Soccer Team Beats Defeat Class L Champion Guilford

The final score was 3-2.

In a fierce and fast-paced contest, the Avon Girls Soccer team beat defending Class L Champions Guilford today at Fisher Meadows, 3-2. Senior defender and co-captain, Amanda Holtzman, scored first on a big run up the left wing, and sophomore midfielder Taylor Lisevich followed up with a goal on a penalty kick. Guilford responded with two of its own goals, tying the score 2-2. It looked like the teams were headed into overtime when, with one second left on the clock, senior forward and co-captain, Hannah Davey, kicked one just out of the Guilford goalie’s reach to win the game. The win was especially emotional for the girls, as it earned their beloved coach, Jim Murray, his 400th career win. In addition, it was the last time the 18 seniors, many of whom have played on the Fisher Meadows fields since childhood, would play on their home field. The Lady Falcons, who were Class L Champions in 2011 and 2012, advance to play Mercy High School in the Class L semi-finals this week and hope to reclaim their title in the finals next weekend.
