Avon High, Police Train For The Unthinkable
Local police and Avon High School officials are training at the school this week to prepare for any 'active shooter' emergencies.

AVON, CT— The grounds at Avon High School Monday were closed and they will be closed again Wednesday so school officials and police can train for something they hope they'll never see.
According to a letter to the community posted on the town's website by Avon Superintendent of Schools Bridget H. Carnemolla, Avon Public Schools and the Avon Police Department are utilizing school athletic fields and building for "active response" training.
The grounds were closed Monday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., with the grounds closed again to the public from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 20.

"This advance training in how to prepare for and respond to various types of emergency scenarios, including active shooter and other types of threats, is the key to preventing, detecting and effectively responding to potential safety issues within our schools," wrote Carnemolla.
She said the public "may hear sirens or alarms and see police activity during the training hours at the school, all of which will be related to the training."
