Avon High School Athletes Honored for Spring Season Success

See who was named to the all-conference and all-state teams.

Avon, CT – Avon High School completed its first year in the highly competitive Central Connecticut Athletic Conference in June, ending an exciting three seasons of Falcon sports.

Athletic Director Tim Filon, who ushered Avon into the new conference during his first year on the job, was very pleased with the effort, skill and sportsmanship shown by Avon High School’s student athletes.

The spring season presented some of the school’s toughest competitions and thrilling wins. A total of 24 individual athletes were named to their respective All-Conference teams, and three qualified for All-State honors. In addition, the school’s growing and highly successful Crew and club Ultimate Frisbee teams had strong finishes.

The following is a complete list of Avon High School’s spring winners:

Baseball

All-Conference: Sean Delgallo, Ian McDonald, Justin Olson and Jeremy Zarwanski.

Of Note: the team advanced to the state semifinals for the first time since 1968, and had big in-season wins against perennial powerhouses Glastonbury and Simsbury

Boys Golf

All-Conference: Jake Avery, Ryan Gorman and Tyler Hahn.

All-State: Jake Avery.

Of note: Avery finished sixth in the New England High School Golf championship held in Keene, NH.

Boys Lacrosse

All-Conference: Dan Magrini.

All-State: Dan Magrini (second team).

Girls Lacrosse

All-Conference: Emma Coran and Kirsten Longbottom.

Boys Tennis

All-Conference: Chris Arciero, Austin Chen, Jamie McNeil and Michael Thramann.

Girls Tennis

All-Conference: SeSe Nguyen.

Boys Track

All-Conference: Geoffrey Kirk and Andrew Suter.

Of Note: Kirk won State Open titles in both the shotput and the discus, qualifying him to compete in the New England championship, where he finished second in the discus.

Girls Track

All Conference: Riley Abate, Carly Carpino, Shilpa Donde, Gina Lindley and Kaleigh Sherman.

Of Note: State Open competitor, Carpino is believed to be the first Avon girl to complete the CIAC heptathlon; she finished 12th with a school record of 3,367 total points.

Crew

More than 90 student-athletes rowed for Avon Crew this spring, and four boats earned medals in statewide competition:

  • Girls 1st Varsity 4: Silver, finishing behind defending State champion Lyme/Old Lyme.
  • Girls 2nd Varsity 4: Bronze.
  • Girls Novice 8: Bronze.
  • Boys 3rd Varsity 8: Bronze.

Of Note: Grace Baldauf was selected as one of 21 rowers from across the country to participate in the 2016 US Rowing Junior Women's National Team High Performance Camp. Grace is the second athlete from Avon to be invited to the Jr. National Team Program and the first girl to receive the honor.

Ultimate Frisbee

This growing club team qualified for the State Division II tournament again this year, and finished third. Michael Rostenberg was named to the All-Star team.
