The Avon High School crew team has asked for a spending increase, according to the Hartford Courant.

The team trains at Power 10 Indoor Rowing Center in Avon and has been paying $5,000 a year - or $2,500 per season. However, Power 10 is seeking to increase the fees to $7,500 per season - or $15,000 per year.

Coaches and team supporters are in support the fee increase.

However, a couple of people associated with the team have a stake in Power 10 and the concern is having coaches recommend spending money for training at a facility they own is a conflict of interest.

The students used rowing machines when they trained at the high school, but have been training at Power 10 since last year.

The team raised money to buy the boats and continues to raise money for operation costs. The district pays for supplies, transportation expenses, and stipends for the coaches.

The school board’s finance subcommittee will review the spending request and the full board will take up the matter later in June.
