Avon High School Fall Athletes Honored
A recap of the outstanding 2015 fall season as provided by the Avon High School Booster Club.
By Avon High School Athletics
Despite some early season jitters, the Avon High School fall sports teams had a decidedly successful first season in the highly competitive CCC league, winning four league championships and delivering some outstanding individual performances. It was an impressive debut for the school and its new Athletic Director, Tim Filon.
In addition to the Conference division titles won by Boys Soccer, Boys Cross-Country, Girls Cross-Country and Football, the Boys Soccer team won the State Class L championship, runner Ryley Higgins finished #1 in the Girls Cross-Country States, 37 individual athletes were named to their respective All-Conference teams, and seven qualified for All-State honors. Additionally, the school’s growing co-ed Crew team delivered another highly successful fall season.

Crew: Avon’s crew program continues to make its mark locally and regionally; the fall team consisted of 51 boys and 46 girls. Of note, the Girls 4 boat made program history by placing in the top half of the field at the Head of the Charles Regatta – the largest regatta in the world, featuring 10,500 athletes. The girls’ finish (36 of 85) secures them guaranteed entry into next year’s event and puts Avon on the map: Of the top 50 boats, theirs was one of only two from public high schools; all other entries were private clubs or prep schools. The boys had a strong regional performance, too, with the Novice team finishing 7th out of 30 boats in the New England Championships.
Locally, at the Head of the Riverfront Regatta, the boys varsity 8 boat was the second highest public school finisher, losing only to Glastonbury, last year’s state champion, while the novice girl and boy boats placed first in the Pumpkinhead Regatta, competing against rowers from Farmington and Simsbury.
Moving on, the Falcons look forward to reporting a strong winter sports finish!
