Avon High School Winter Sports Wrap-up

Teams played hard against new, tougher competition in the competitive CCC.

AVON, CT - Here is a roundup of winter sports at Avon High School, courtesy of the AHS booster club:

Avon High School’s winter teams played hard against new, tougher competition in the highly competitive Central Connecticut Conference, which the athletic program joined this year.

Although not as successful overall as the fall teams were, the winter teams delivered some outstanding individual performances and bettered their games by playing highest caliber teams.

The following is a complete list of Avon High School’s winter winners:

Boys Ice Hockey – 15-7 record; CCC South Conference Champions. The team is a co-op that includes players from Avon, Farmington and Windsor. The team had its best season ever and advanced to the state tournament (losing to Cheshire).

All-Conference: Peter Hoffman.

Girls Basketball – 10-11 record.

All-Conference: Abby Laszewski

Of Note: Laszewski scored her 1000th career point and set a single season school record of 82 blocks. In addition, longtime Coach Frank Waters advanced his 19-year record to 378-95.

Boys Basketball – 5-15 record.

Of note: Avon beat rival Farmington twice this season, to retain the coveted Taft Cup.

Wrestling – 10-11 record.

Of note: Seniors Jack St. Onge and Anthony Tripodi both logged 100-plus career victories this season.

Co-Ed Swimming and Diving – 11-4 record; CCC North White Championship Meet winners and CT Splash Meet champions.

All-Conference: Brendan Downey (diving), Kyle Emery, Maksymilian Jaremko, Sam Johnson, Andre Richard, Riley Strassner.

All-State: Kyle Emery, Riley Strassner.

Of note: The team set five new Conference meet records, and senior Riley Strassner earned his career 1,000th point

Indoor Track - The team participates only in invitational events, so there is no win/loss record, but five new school records were set by runners Andrew Suter and Christine Oberhausen, and hurdlers. Andrew Blackmore, Hayley Dougela and Jenny Koo.
