Avon Legislative Delegation Updates Residents

The following is a press release from the Avon legislative delegation:

State Senator Kevin Witkos (R-8), Representative Tim LeGeyt (R-17) and Representative Brian Becker (D-19) provided a legislative update to Avon residents at the Town Council meeting earlier this month.

On the evening of Thursday, September 4, the three state lawmakers participated in an open discussion at Avon Town Hall concerning legislation affecting the town of Avon and priorities for the 2015 legislative session.

Representative Becker provided an overview of the state aid allocated to the Town of Avon.

“Maintaining municipal aid in our state’s budget and getting a $450,000 STEAP grant for Avon’s streetscape were critical in helping local officials keep property taxes down,” said Representative Becker. “We are always happy to hear from our constituents and local officials about the town’s priorities and goals and how we can help the town achieve them.”

Representative LeGeyt discussed new legislation passed this year that affects municipalities.

“It is important to me that citizens feel they are being kept informed not only about the major issues facing our state legislature, but more importantly, about the impact on our local communities,” said Representative LeGeyt. “I appreciated the opportunity to speak directly with residents and town leaders and to hear about what concerns them.”

Senator Witkos led a discussion on what lies ahead, including future legislative initiatives and goals.

“I am always interested in learning about what issues are most important to my community members,” said Senator Witkos. “We had a very informative discussion at the meeting regarding legislative priorities and received some really helpful feedback and insight from the Town Council. I want to thank the constituents and local leaders for joining us and contributing to a great dialogue.”

Community members also raised questions about utility rate hike proposals and unfunded mandates burdening towns. Looking ahead, constituents expressed concerns regarding car taxes and the real estate conveyance tax and shared their desire to address both issues during the next legislative session.
