AVON, CT — What does the heyday of American industrialization have to do with Avon?

The answer is in Lions Club International.

The local chapter of the Lions Club is the topic of "Avon Talks," a monthly podcast about Avon's history, landmarks, and current events from the Avon Historical Society and the Town of Avon.

Ethan Guo, an Avon Resident and current Tufts University undergraduate student, hosts it.

Heidi Zacchera, the president of the Avon Lions Club since 2004, was the guest on the most recent podcast now available for listening.

In 1917, the Lions Club was founded in Chicago, Ill., in response to the height of American industrialism, where widespread disease, poor living conditions, and endemic child labor ravaged many dense, metropolitan areas.

The club wouldn’t take long to extend its impact throughout the United States and the world.

The Lions first formally made their presence in Avon in 1951 and have since become a cornerstone of charitable social service within the community.
