Avon Obituary: Alice Zacchera, 96

Alice (Yergin) Zacchera, 96, of Avon, beloved wife of the late Raymond J. Zacchera, passed away peacefully, Saturday, March 19, 2016, at her home.

Born in NYC, she was the daughter of the late Rev. Howard Yergin and Ida (Flohr) Yergin. Alice had been a statistician for the New York School for the Blind. She came to Avon in 1943, to what is now Avon Old Farms School to work and rehab blind servicemen from WWII; where she met her future husband Raymond. Alice received her BS from SUNY in Oneonta and her MA from Central CT State College. She taught first grade at Huckleberry Hill and Roaring Brook Schools for 20 years before retiring in 1984. A long active member of the Avon Congregational Church, she served on the Deaconate and Christian Education Board, as well as performing in the hand bell choir. Alice enjoyed sewing and especially making quilts.

She leaves her children Marcia Guerry of Avon, Wendy Zacchera of Avon, Raymond Lewis Zacchera of Winsted, and Heidi Zacchera of Avon; a brother Paul Yergin of Tucson, AZ; five grandchildren Paul, Jason, Kevin, Whitney, and William; two great granddaughters Macayla and Ruby Grayce; and several nieces and nephews. Besides her husband Raymond, she was predeceased by a brother Howard and sisters Ruth Yergin, Gladys Voelker, and Helen Brown.

The family would like to thank her caregivers especially Catherine for her gentle care.

At Alice's request, there will be no calling hours and private graveside services will be held in Evergreen Cemetery, Avon where she will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband Raymond.
