Disaster Hits Avon: What Do You Do?

Avon's emergency management chief will host two lectures on Wednesday, Dec. 6, to help residents prepare for future cataclysms.

AVON, CT — For most of us, situations classified as emergencies range from a stubbed toe to nuclear armageddon and everything in between.

And on Wednesday, Avon's top official charged with dealing with the more serious types of public emergencies will help folks prepare and be ready for anything (stubbed toes not included).

Avon Emergency Management Director Bruce Appell will give two lectures, sponsored by the Avon Lions Club, on “What You Can Do To Be Prepared When Emergency Strikes.”

"When disaster strikes, damage caused by a natural disaster such as a hurricane, tornado, or flood, or from manmade events such as explosions or hazardous materials accidents, can affect all aspects of a community, from government services to private and civic activities," wrote the Town of Avon in an announcement.

Appell's talk will focus on what residents and community leaders can do should disaster strike, roads are damaged or impassable and emergency response agency access is limited or curtailed.

"In the initial period immediately following a disaster—often up to three days or longer—individuals, households, and neighborhoods may need to rely on their own resources for food, water and shelter," wrote the town.

Those interested are asked to sign up for this program, doing so on the Avon Free Public Library calendar, or calling the Avon Office of Emergency Management at 860-409-4319.
