Avon Police to Host Drug Take Back Day

From the Avon Police Department: On Saturday, April 29, 2017 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., the Avon Police Department, in conjunction with the Drug Enforcement Agency, will hold a Drug Take Back event at the Avon Senior Center, 635 West Avon Road, Avon. This is a great opportunity to rid your home of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs. This service is free and open to the public. Expired, unused and/or unwanted pills and patches may be dropped off; however, liquids, needles and/or sharps cannot be accepted.

Overall, in twelve previous national Drug Take Back events, the federal Drug Enforcement Agency, Working with law enforcement agencies, has taken in over 7.1 million pounds (more than 3,500 tons) of pills.

This initiative addresses vital public safety and public health issues. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses, due in part to these drugs. In addition, flushing medications or throwing them in the trash can create safety and health hazards.
