Avon Prepares To Bid Final Goodbye To Fallen Fire Official

The AVFD Deputy Chief will be laid to rest Friday, with multiple town service and traffic impacts announced that day.

AVON, CT — Traffic and municipal services will be impacted in Avon on Friday as the town says goodbye to a beloved firefighter who died last week.

Avon Volunteer Fire Department Deputy Chief David Theriault, a nearly 35-year member of the AVFD, died in the line of duty Jan. 15 following a battle with cancer.

In order for town employees and community members to attend Theriault's funeral on Friday, Jan. 23, the following adjustments are being made to town services that day:

  • The Avon Department of Public Works will be closed.
  • The Avon Town Hall Complex and Police Records Office will close at 11:30 a.m.
  • The Avon Free Public Library will be closed due to road closures and overflow parking needs related to the funeral services.
  • The Avon Senior Center will be open regular hours from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • The Avon Transfer Station will be open regular hours from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Town facilities will reopen on Monday, Jan. 26, as regularly scheduled.

"We thank the community for its understanding and cooperation as we come together to say goodbye to a valued member of our organization," wrote the town in an announcement.

Meanwhile, the AVFD said a large funeral procession will assemble in town at 10:45 a.m. Friday, with the funeral service at 1 p.m.

Theriault's funeral will be at the West Avon Congregational Church, 280 Country Club Road, Avon.

"Please note that one of the public schools in the immediate area will be dismissing around the same time; caution and patience are appreciated," wrote the AVFD in a statement.

Parking will be available at the Avon Free Public Library, 281 Country Club Road.

The procession will pass by AVFD Co. 1, located at 25 Darling Drive, shortly before 11 a.m., with AVFD members expected to line up and salute their fallen colleague.
