Avon PZC Backs Public Works HQ Expansion Project

Preliminary cost estimates range from $127,000 to $260,000 for the plan, which would increase storage and office space.

AVON, CT — The Avon Planning and Zoning Commission has unanimously supported a proposal to expand the town’s public works facility during its March 10 meeting, clearing the way for the project to move forward.

The commission voted to approve an 8-24 referral for the addition of a storage building and expansion of the existing office at the Avon Department of Public Works site.

Under Connecticut law, such referrals require a determination that a municipal project aligns with the town’s plan of conservation and development.

Avon Planning and Community Development Director Hiram Peck told commissioners the proposal includes two components: a new storage garage behind the existing building and an addition to the current office structure.

Avon Public Works Director Bruce Williams said the new garage would measure 60 by 72 feet and be located at the rear southeast portion of the site.

The structure is designed to house winter equipment that is currently stored outdoors.

“This building will house all winter equipment that is currently housed/staged in outdoor areas on the site,” Williams said.

He added that mowers, excavators, and other large equipment are now left outside during the winter months.

Williams emphasized the financial and operational benefits of the project.

“All this equipment is very expensive — storing it while not in use should allow for the longest life possible,” he said.

He noted the equipment and facility needs have been on the town’s capital improvement plan for three to four years.

The town has secured a state grant for the project, and requests for proposals were scheduled to go out the following day.

Preliminary cost estimates range from $127,000 to $260,000, according to Williams.

PZC Commissioner Christine Graesser made the motion to approve the referral, stating the project is consistent with the town’s 2016 Plan of Conservation and Development. Commissioner Chris White seconded the motion.

The measure passed unanimously, with Chair Lisa Levin, Vice Chair Robin Baran, and commissioners Graesser, White, Joseph Gentile, Peter Mahoney and Jamie DiPace voting in favor.

No opposition or significant debate was recorded.

With the referral approved, the project can proceed to the next stages of design and contracting.
