AVON, CT — A symbol of post-World War II domestic prosperity, the neighborhood block party seems to have gone the way of the bomb shelter, Lucky Strikes and children running amok outside.

But the Town of Avon's recreation and parks department is encouraging folks to break out the grill and get to know their neighbors and it is going out of its way to help neighborhoods have such soirees.

"Block parties are a great way to build community and bring your neighborhood together and we want to help you do it," wrote the Town of Avon.

The town is, even, hosting a summer-long contest through August where folks having block parties can submit photos to be entered into a raffle for a $100 gift certificate for recreation department activities.

Avon's rec department even has readily available tips for hosting such parties and is telling folks how to obtain the necessary permits from the Avon Police Department to close down streets and fire up the grill.
