AVON, CT — The Avon Police Department is urging residents to lock their vehicles, secure their homes, and remove valuables from cars following a recent increase in overnight thefts across town.

Authorities often receive several reports over the course of one or two days, followed by weeks with no reported incidents.
Video footage reviewed by investigators suggests that suspects generally move on when they encounter locked vehicles.
Police said they typically do not break windows to gain entry unless valuables are visible inside the vehicle.
The department described the incidents as "a crime of opportunity" and encouraged residents to reduce the risk of theft by removing valuables, keys, and key fobs from vehicles and ensuring all doors are locked.
The department advised residents not to confront suspected criminals. Instead, police recommend serving as good witnesses by observing and reporting descriptions of suspects, vehicles, and other details that may assist investigators.
Police also encouraged residents to report suspicious activity by calling the Avon Police Department at 860-409-4200.
