Avon Voters OK Town/School Budget, How Much Will Taxes Rise?

AVON, CT — Avon voters approved the town’s proposed $122.3 million town/school budget for the 2026-27 fiscal year during a referendum held Wednesday at the Avon Senior Center.

According to unofficial results released by town officials, 876 residents voted in favor of the spending plan, while 685 voted against it.

A total of 1,561 ballots were cast, representing a voter turnout of 11.8%.

The approved budget totals $122,281,503, an increase of about $3.66 million, or 3.08%, from the current fiscal year budget of $118.62 million.

Town officials said the budget includes a proposed mill rate of 31.80, up from the current 30.75 rate.

The increase of 1.05 mills represents a 3.41% rise in the tax rate.

Based on town estimates, the change would increase annual property taxes by about $315 for a home assessed at $300,000.

Officials also noted that a provision in the Avon Town Charter automatically approves a budget if turnout falls below 9% of registered voters, even if a majority votes against it.

Because turnout exceeded the 9% threshold on Wednesday, the charter provision did not affect the outcome.
