Avon Makes Its Choice In Firehouse Decorating Contest

AVON, CT — A holiday event organizers hope will become a new tradition appears to have enjoyed a successful beginning this year.

And, now that the votes are in, the Avon Volunteer Fire Department's Company 4 (the Huckleberry Hill Road unit) came out winners in the first annual Avon Firehouse Decorating Contest.

The announcement of the winner came Wednesday morning and, now, this group of brave firefighters have bragging rights over their colleagues at three other stations in town.

AVFD officials said this was the first year of the contest and the hope is for it to continue.

"Thank you to everyone who participated in our First Annual Firehouse Decorating Contest. We received lots of donations and votes - thank you neighbors," wrote the AVFD in an announcement.
Perhaps fueling the success of the contest was the way it was conducted.

Residents donated holiday decorations to the individual firehouses, likely those in their neighborhoods.

Then, when the decoration displays were complete, folks could tour the town and vote via SurveyMonkey online.

The four firehouses competing were: Company 1 at 25 Darling Drive (the AVFD's main headquarters); Company 2 at 106 Secret Lake Road; Company 3 at 490 West Avon Road; and Company 4 at 365 Huckleberry Hill Road.

Online voting took place from Dec. 11-17.

Since all went well in 2022, organizers are hoping for even more successful holiday decoration smackdowns of the friendly variety in future years.

"They are the first winners of what will be an annual tradition for hopefully many years to come," the AVFD wrote of Company 4.
