Breadmaker Gets Avon PZC's OK To Open Bakery

AVON, CT — The town's top land-use board has given the green light for a West Hartford baker's plan to expand his artisan bread operation into Avon.

Last month, the Avon Planning and Zoning Commission unanimously approved a special exception permit for breadmaker Kevin Masse, who owns Small State Provisions and operates a special food truck out of West Hartford.

The exception was required because Masse would be operating a bakery in a building located in an area zoned for industrial use at 205 Old Farms Road, Avon.

That building is owned by Cornerstone Landing LLC, with representatives from Cornerstone also present at a PZC public hearing July 19.

Masse also owns a store located in the Gastro Park food truck site in West Hartford, which he opened in July 2021.

Business has grown so much since, Masse was looking for a permanent site where he could also bake his products, which range from sourdough bread to small-batch granola.

According to Masse, in addition to locals who enjoy his organic, artisan bread, many area restaurants purchase bread from him as well.

Avon Director of Planning and Community Development Hiram Peck told PZC members the site was a good fit for what Masse wants to do.

As a result, the PZC easily approved Masse's application.

Masse has said his goal is to open up the new bakery facility in Avon sometime in the fall and he will still operate his West Hartford location.
