This one-hour presentation takes us around all the southern islands of New England to see timeless New England island ports and landscapes. We will come to appreciate the soul of each distinctive locale. We will Island hop from the tranquil shores of Nantucket Island, where each cobblestone holds tales of the 19th century, to Martha’s Vineyard with its storybook gingerbread cottages. We will travel to Block Island, a favourite of Connecticut residents, to see the cascading shorelines of Mohegan Bluffs, a highlight of Rhode Island’s coastal islands. We might even find a mystical uniquely Block Island phenomena, the glass orb !!! We will stop over in Newport, Rhode Island, celebrated for its sailing yachts crafted during the “Golden Age of Yachting.” and end up back on the shores of Connecticut.
Presenter: Dr Richard W. Benfield was formerly Professor of Geography at Central Connecticut State University in New Britain, Connecticut where he taught courses in Human Geography, the history and management of National Parks, Plants, Predators and Parks, Russia, The European Union and many of the courses in the department’s tourism track. Prior to coming to Central he was Senior Program Coordinator in the Division of Continuing Education at the University of Oklahoma where he instructed citizens of the new Russian Federation on privatization and the transition to a market economy. He obtained his doctorate in geography from the University of Oklahoma in 1998. Prior to commencing his teaching career at the University of Oklahoma, he was Vice-President of Marketing at Whistler Ski resort, Canada, home of the 2010 Winter Olympics, Executive Director of the Banff-Lake Louise Chamber of Commerce and a tourism marketing executive with the Government of Alberta.
In 2013 his book Garden Tourism was published by CABI Press, Abingdon, England.

The music department at First Church Simsbury will present, as the final part of this year’s concert series, a special cabaret performance by outstanding jazz, R &amp; B and New Orleans artist Wanda Houston, at 7 PM on Friday, May 8.
Palmer Hall, the church’s great gathering hall, will be decked out with candles and decorations on each table, and there will be light fare and beverages available as you sit with friends and enjoy a mesmerizing mix of jazz and R&amp;B music in a fun, informal atmosphere on a warm spring evening.&nbsp;Houston, a Chicago native who has come to call the Berkshires “home” after touring internationally, is known throughout the region as the “Berkshire Diva”.Her project, known as the “HBH Band”, consists of some exceptional and seasoned area musicians: Berklee grad and area teacher and performer Jay Bradley on drums, and keyboardist Scott Heth, also a long-time Western CT and Berkshire performer, on the grand piano. Added to this mix will be Charlie Tokarz – a celebrated area master of the saxophone, flute and clarinet, also a music teacher.

We’re excited to invite students in&nbsp;grades 4–7&nbsp;to campus for&nbsp;S.P.A.R.K.—a free, hands-on&nbsp;morning of discovery&nbsp;at Kingswood Oxford on&nbsp;Saturday, May 16.
S.P.A.R.K.&nbsp;stands for&nbsp;Science. Play. Action. Research. Knowledge,&nbsp;and that’s exactly what the morning is all about. Students will dive into interactive labs, ask big questions, and explore how science connects to the world around them.
Throughout the morning, students will rotate through all three engaging sessions:
Snack Science: Cracking the Code of Carbs, Fats &amp; Proteins
Students will test everyday foods to uncover the building blocks of life - carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins.
From Cabbage to Chemistry: A Color-Changing Exploration of pH
Using red cabbage as a natural indicator, students will experiment with acids and bases and watch chemistry come alive in vibrant color.
Air Apparent: The Invisible Force All Around Us
Through hands-on experiments, students will explore the properties of air—and discover just how powerful something invisible can be.
