Charity Basketball Tournament Friday at Avon High School

The first Hoops 4 Hope Charity Basketball Tournament involves students, teachers, coaches and parents.

The initial Hoops 4 Hope Charity Basketball Tournament will be held Friday, Jan. 8 at 7 p.m. at Avon High School in the new gym.

Money raised from the tournament will be donated to Covenant Preparatory School, a tuition free middle school in Hartford.

Avon sophomore Chris Whipple organized the tournament. He has spent many summers tutoring at Covenant Prep and wanted to create an event to help raise money for the school.

Each of the eight teams playing will consist of teachers, coaches, parents and students. They will play in a one game elimination tournament.

There will also be a halftime free throw contest.

Local sponsors include Aetna, Amici, Cashman & Katz, Franklin Painting, JB Sports Gear, Mooyah Burgers Fries & Shakes, Poseidon Lacrosse and Wingstop.

Tickets are $5 at the door.
