Dual Cross Country Titles for Avon Girls

Falcons win the Nonnewaug and Hale Ray Invitationals back-to-back.

This past weekend was full of success for the girls’ cross country team from Avon High School.

On Friday afternoon, the Falcons made full use of their depth to edge Immaculate and capture the Nonnewaug Invitational in Woodbury. Less than 24 hours later, Avon traveled in the opposite direction to Moodus, and easily won the Hale Ray Invitational.

At Nonnewaug, Immaculate placed the first three runners across the finish line, but Rachel Martin (4th), Ryley Higgins (6th), Ashley Martin (10th), Sara Leavens (11th) and Christina Martin (14th) packed fairly close together to give Avon 45 points.

A big key to that victory was Avon’s sixth and seventh runners; Caroline Luby and Gabriella Colletti each finished ahead of Immaculate’s fifth finisher, enabling the Falcons to post a 45-49 margin for the title.

Saturday’s event at Hale Ray was the complete opposite, as Avon breezed to victory with 20 points, far outdistancing runnerup Lyman Memorial’s 79.

Rachel Martin was the overall winner, followed by Leavens (3rd), Higgins (4th), Christina Martin (5th), Ashley Martin (7th), Colletti (9th) and Luby (11th).

The Falcons are back in action Tuesday with a one-on-one matchup at Northwest Catholic at 3:45 p.m.
