On Sunday, Oct. 2, the Avon Land Trust will host a dedication ceremony for its newest
property, Oakes Preserve, located on Chidsey Road near the intersection with Waterville Road.
The event, an Open House, will run from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., and feature guided hikes, live music and refreshments. The 17-acre parcel for Oakes Preserve was acquired via a land swap of a smaller parcel originally donated to the trust by the family of Nora Oakes Howard, Avon’s town historian. The parcel is named for the Oakes family.
Oakes Preserve is a park-like setting with easy public access from several points, and a gravel parking area. It has unique features such as a clay-bottomed pond once used by local farmers for ice; a buttonwood swamp; a beautiful meadow; woodlands; and the former wagon road to the old town center. The parcel is rich in wildlife, making it an ideal place for birdwatchers to visit. The land trust has been busy clearing a hiking loop around the property. This summer the land trust installed a gazebo near the front entrance.
The Oakes Preserve dedication is a family- and dog-friendly event, open to the public. The raindate
is Saturday, Oct. 8.
