Health News Misinformation Topic Of Avon Library Event
A University of Connecticut journalism professor will discuss issues related to accurate, online health news — a key pandemic issue.
AVON, CT — The University of Connecticut's journalism department head will be at the Avon Free Public Library Thursday, March 9, to discuss the amount of health misinformation online.
The forum is at 2 p.m. in the Avon Library's community room, 281 Country Club Road.
UConn Journalism Department Chairperson Marie K. Shanahan will address how news literacy can help people decide what online health information to trust, share and act upon.

She will also explain some of the psychological and motivating factors that influence our information processing and behavior.
The issue became especially acute during the Covid-19 pandemic, when a sea of misinformation drove some to avoid the vaccine or deny the seriousness of the situation, leading to unnecessary deaths.
