How Avon Businesses Fared in Hurricane Sandy

Many Avon businesses closed during Hurricane Sandy as the power went out and workers remained safely at home.

But a select few were able to stay open.

Avon Master Pizza owner Svat Tasdan has the fortune of living in apartments behind the plaza where his pizza place is. The restaurant stayed open until 8 p.m. Oct. 29, right before the hurricane peaked in the Farmington Valley. Normally the business is open until 10 p.m.

The Route 44 restaurant was still delivering pizzas up until close to surrounding towns.

"The driving conditions were not that bad," he said. "After the sun set, it was limited. Safety first, but it was okay."

Master Pizza lost power from midnight to 9 a.m. Tuesday., but was open again that day. Tasdan said that there were very few businesses open on Route 44 when the storm hit.

His kids, Berra, 6, and Yusuf, 10, both Pine Grove School students, spent time with him at work Tuesday because schools were closed for the second day.

New England Pasta company, located on Route 44, was also open both days, but half of the staff stayed home because of the weather.

Avon resident and owner Kim Morrison said that "all of the food's safe." 

Business was steady Oct. 30 as people were out and about once the storm let up.

Enterprise Rent a Car, located on Route 44, closed at noon Oct. 29, but by that point most of the rental cars had been returned. They reopened once Gov. Dannel P. Malloy's driving ban on state highways was lifted.

Avon Country Deli, Luke's Donut Shop and Big Y had generators in the event of power outages and they stayed open. Lime Bar & Grill also was open for business and Lumani's Ye Olde Barber Shop was cutting people's hair for free on Tuesday.
