Iraq War Veteran from Avon Shot to Death in Alabama

The former first lieutenant and tank commander was gunned down in his own driveway Tuesday morning.

An Avon High School graduate who served in the Iraq war was shot to death Tuesday morning in the driveway of his home in Alabama, WBRC-TV reported.

Jonathan Michael Gilotti, known as Mike, was 33.

He graduated from Avon High School in 2001 and from the University of Massachusetts in 2005, according to his wedding announcement on GulfCoastNewsToday.com.

According to a police spokesman in Hoover, Ala., Gilotti was heading out to a local gym shortly before 5 a.m., and may have encountered someone breaking into cars in the neighborhood.

He was shot once in the upper body, and collapsed in front of his home, where he was pronounced dead, the spokesman said.

Gilotti served as a U.S. Army tank commander, first lieutenant and platoon leader in the 12th Cavalry Regiment, the spokesman said.

He leaves his wife Heather and two sons, ages 5 and 1.
