Learn Pottery From Colonial Times At Avon Library Event

A noted potter will demonstrate colonial redware techniques at Avon Library next week, with sgraffito decorating and pottery for sale.

AVON, CT — A Connecticut potter known for recreating historic colonial styles will lead a live pottery demonstration next week at the local library.

Erich Steinhagen of Griswold will present a historical pottery demonstration at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 10, in the Community Room at the Avon Free Public Library, 281 Country Club Road.

Steinhagen has worked as a potter for more than 50 years, beginning with a high school apprenticeship.

For the past three decades, he and his wife, Janice, have produced pottery inspired by 18th-century redware traditions.

During the program, the couple will demonstrate how pots are formed on a traditional potter’s wheel and decorated using sgraffito, a scratching technique widely used by German and English potters during the colonial period.

The presentation will also include a discussion of several unusual pottery forms that were common in early American colonies.

Finished pieces will be displayed during the event and offered for sale.

The program is sponsored by the Friends of the Avon Library. Seating is limited, and attendees are encouraged to reserve a spot in advance through the library’s website.
