Memorial Day 2026 In Avon, Parade Information, Closings Announced

Memorial Day is on Monday, May 25, with several towns hosting parades honoring those who died in the line of duty.

AVON, CT — Avon’s annual Memorial Day Parade will return Monday, May 25, with this year’s event honoring the 250th anniversary of the United States.

The 81st annual parade, organized by Avon VFW Post 3272 and the Town of Avon, is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.

Organizers are encouraging all veterans to participate in the parade, noting that vehicles will be available for those needing transportation assistance.

This year’s event will feature special units and a historic float commemorating the nation’s semiquincentennial celebration.

The parade will begin at the former Avon Board of Education Annex at 34 Simsbury Road and travel south along Routes 10 and 202 before turning west onto Route 44.

The procession will conclude near the Avon Town Green at the intersection of Route 44 and Ensign Drive.

Following the parade, a ceremony will take place at the Veterans Memorial on the green. The public is invited to attend both the parade and memorial ceremony.

Organizers said the event is intended to honor service members who died in military service while also recognizing veterans from all branches of the armed forces.

In the event of rain, a smaller indoor ceremony with limited attendance will be held at 11 a.m. at the Avon Senior Center, 635 West Avon Road.

The holiday originated after the Civil War as “Decoration Day” and became a federal holiday in 1971.

Holiday closings, impacts

Town officials also announced that Avon municipal offices, Public Works, the Senior Center, the landfill, and the Avon Free Public Library will be closed on Monday, May 25, in observance of Memorial Day.

The landfill will remain open during regular hours on Saturday, May 23, from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., while the library will operate from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. that day.
