Morning T-Storm In Avon Leads To Busy Morning For AVFD
Two transformer fires and an electrical problem were investigated by Avon firefighters in a 20-minute period Friday morning.
AVON, CT — In less than 20 minutes on Friday, the Avon Volunteer Fire Department scrambled to two transformer explosions and a possible gas leak as thunderstorms ripped through the area.
Ultimately, the Transformers were not cars that turn into robots and the gas lead proved unfounded.
According to the AVFD, an electrical transformer (not a robot) "exploded" outside on West Avon Road at 9:21 a.m. Friday.

This resulted in traffic lights being out on Dale and Woodmont roads and Eversource Energy crews being notified.
Then, at 9:27 a.m., the AVFD said another transformer (the electrical component, not a robot vehicle) caught fire on Stony Corners Circle, resulting in more action from Eversource.

Finally, at 9:40 a.m., there was an emergency call on West Main Street reporting a possible gas leak, with the caller reporting a "rotten egg" smell.
Fire officials said the building occupants were evacuated and a "possible electrical issue" was the likely cause.
Shortly thereafter, all units were able to return to their base and no injuries were reported.
