Avon Celebrates New Trail Mural

AVON, CT — Town officials and local passive recreation enthusiasts are celebrating community artwork that was recently completed giving walkers and bikers something to look at on a popular trail in town.
The Town of Avon, Bike Walk Avon CT and the Farmington Valley Trails Council recently announced the completion of a decorative mural inside the Route 44 underpass through which the Farmington Canal Heritage Trail portion of the East Coast Greenway passes in the Avon Village Center area.
The mural, a sunrise/sunset nature pictorial, was designed and hand-painted by local artist Christy Hickey who donated her ideas, time and talents to the project.

Hickey’s daughter, Olivia, assisted her with the painting over several days in mid-September.
The artwork was commissioned by Bike Walk Avon CT and the effort was made possible through the group’s efforts, the work of Town of Avon staff, and the support of the Avon Town Council and the Farmington Valley Trails Council.

Also, anonymous Avon residents donated the funds to purchase the paint and other materials needed to create the mural.
"Thank you to Christy, Olivia, and all who played a part in this important beautification project that brightens up a previously underwhelming section of the Avon Village Center area," reads a Town of Avon announcement on the mural.
The council will formally recognize and accept the donation of the mural at its meeting Thursday, Nov. 3, at 7 p.m. in the selectmen’s chamber ( Avon Town Hall, Building No. 1).
The meeting will also be accessible virtually via a link on the agenda. The public is welcome to attend.
