Power 10 in Avon to celebrate relocation with Open House Sept. 25
Power 10 Indoor Rowing Center will also offer free classes the week of Sept. 25 and a new member promotion.

Power 10 Indoor Rowing Center relocated over the summer, and though the move was just a short distance away, it was a big one in other ways.
“Our business has grown – we offer both adult rowing fitness classes and rowing development for student rowers – so we needed more space,” owner/operator Cristina Abramson said.
The center’s physical address is still 395 West Avon Road in Avon at the corner of Country Club Road, but it is now on the lower level of The Next Street driving school. In its previous location, there were separate rooms for the rowing machines and the 4-seat Swingulators (crew shell rowing simulators), Abramson said. Now, all equipment is in one large space.

To celebrate their move, Power 10 will host an open house on Sunday, Sept. 25 from 12 to 3 p.m. The center is also offering free classes the week of Sept. 25, and is running a new member “30 Days for $30” promotion. Available to new members only, those who sign up and pay $30 by Oct. 31 can take unlimited rowing fitness classes for 30 days.
“Rowing offers good health and fitness benefits to everyone, not just the crew team,” Abramson said. “New to rowing? No problem; we’ll teach you everything you need to know.”

Power10 Row classes, for both new and experienced rowers, offer a low-impact, full-body workout of 60 minutes, available Mondays and Wednesdays at 6:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m.; Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.; and Sundays at 9 a.m.
“Using Concept2 rowing machines, our classes are led by energized instructors and surround-sound music,” Abramson said. “A fitness class similar to spinning classes, this is a complete total-body workout that you won’t find anywhere else.”
Men and women of all ages and abilities have become regulars at Power 10.
“Rowing has been a life changer for me personally,” said Avon resident Kim Davis, who has attended classes twice a week during the past year. “It’s great exercise that gives the opportunity to burn a lot of calories. I’ve lost over 20 pounds, I sleep like a baby and the classes are fun.”
She has also found the low-impact aspect of rowing is better for her ankle after sustaining a break than high-impact exercise was.
Another type of class, Power10 Row 60X, combines rowing intervals on rowing machines with dynamic sculpting exercises. Continuous movement is the theme of this class, which balances cardio, strength, and flexibility training while being a low-impact workout.
“We also partner with adult enrichment programs in the Farmington Valley to offer additional fitness class times, including Avon Recreation & Parks, Simsbury Continuing Education, and Farmington Continuing Education,” Abramson said. “Check with them for special Power10 class offerings.”
Power10’s Youth Indoor Rowing programs are offered throughout the year. High school winter training begins Nov. 21 and runs through next February, offering cross-training through rowing for all athletes. Middle School Learn-to-Row sessions are in the spring and late summer.
“The primary goal of our August middle school program is to get students ready to join their high school crew team,” Abramson said. “Power 10 introduces middle school kids to the sport of rowing, teaches the basic fundamentals of the rowing stroke and improves their overall fitness, training on both the erg (rowing machine) and the Swingulator.”
Cross-training boot camps for youth and adults are also held in the summer.
For coxswains, who are an essential part of the boat with many roles and responsibilities to both the rowers and the coach, Coxswain Clinics are offered three times a year, providing information about ensuring the safety of the crew, steering, communicating, training plans, control, pacing the boat and more. The Coxswain Huddle brings together high school coxswains for a 1.5 to 3-hour moderated forum providing the opportunity for learning and sharing challenges and successes with peers.
Power 10 was founded in 2014 by Bernie Horowitz, Chris Dlugolecki and Eric Rosow, all of Avon, and Renee Jones of Granby. Rosow, Dlugolecki and Jones are experienced crew coaches at either the high school or college level and together came up with the idea of having a place for winter training. Abramson, an experienced rower and coach who lives in Avon, joined the business shortly after it opened and there are six additional coaches/instructors on staff.
