As Practice Opens, a Look at Avon Fall State Championships

AVON, CT — Thursday marks the official opening of practice for fall high school sports, and the first day gives every team hope and optimism that perhaps a state championship is in the cards.

A total of 22 Avon teams have captured state titles in fall sports in the past:

• boys soccer (8): 2015 (L), 2014 (L), 2000 (M), 1989 (M), 1988 (M), 1987 (M), 1985 (M), 1984 (M)
• girls cross country (7): 2015 (MM), 2014 (MM), 2012 (MM), 1994 (SS), 1987 (M), 1985 (M/State Open), 1984 (M/State Open)
• girls soccer (5): 2012 (L), 2011 (L), 2003 (M), 2002 (M), 2001 (M)
• field hockey (2): 1984 (S), 1983 (S)
