Registration Under Way For Farmington Valley NFL Football League

The recreational league includes players from several towns.

AVON, CT - Registration is now open for the fall season of the Farmington Valley NFL Football League.

The league, sanctioned by the National Football League, is a non-contact flag football program for boys and girls entering Grades 1 through 12. No previous experience is necessary and there are no tryouts or cuts.

The league is open to players from Avon, Burlington, Canton, Farmington, Granby, Simsbury, West Hartford and surrounding towns.

The program was founded in 2014 by parent Laurie Hicks of Avon with the Avon Recreation and Parks Department. It has grown from 55 players the first fall to 170 players last year.

Backed by USA Football, the league has a full set of rules for each division developed by the NFL's flag football program and local officials. Teams are made up eight to nine players.

Teams are co-ed through Grade 6 and grades may be combined if necessary.

After that the teams are:

Boys

  • Grades 7 and 8.
  • Grades 9 and 10.
  • Grades 11 and 12.

Girls

  • Grades 7 and 8.
  • Grades 9 and 10.
  • Grades 11 and 12.

Practices are scheduled for one night per week at the coaches’ discretion from Aug. 24 to Nov. 1. Games take place are held on Sundays and are 44-minute 5v5 games. Practices and games are held at Avon Middle School. A reversible NFL game jersey and flag belts are provided.

Registration can be completed through Friday, Aug. 1 in person at the Sycamore Hills Pool Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. or online at www.avonrec.com. The fee is $120 per registrant and a $25 late fee will apply from Aug. 2 to Aug. 15.
