Regulatory Authority Approves Massive Rate Hike for CT Light and Power and UI Customers
Effective Jan. 1, 2015 CL&P and UI residential generation rates will increase.
The Public Utilities Regulatory Authority has approved major rate hikes for customers who buy their electrical supply through the Connecticut Light & Power Company and the United Illuminating Company.
Effective Jan. 1, 2015 CL&P residential generation rates will increase from 9.99 cents per kilowatt-hour to 12.629 cents. UI’s rate will go from 8.6657 cents to 13.2108 cents.
Generation of electricity covers about half of the average residential bill. The other part covers distribution and other fees.

About 40 percent of all state residential electricity customers get their electricity generation from CL&P or UI. There are alternative electric suppliers, which can be seen here.
CL&P cited a dramatic increase in the price to produce electricity and limitations of existing natural gas pipelines.

Last week state Attorney General George Jepsen urged PURA to scrutinize the reasons behind the proposed massive rate hike.
