Solar Panels Planned for Roofs of 2 Schools & DPW Building

Avon town officials plan to install solar panels on the roofs of the high school, middle school and DPW buildings, and expect to save money.

Town officials think Avon may save as much s $20,000 a year from the installation of solar panels on the roofs of Avon High School, Avon Middle School and the town Department of Public Works building, the Hartford Courant reports.

The panels could generate as much as 10 percent of the electricity used by the schools and town government, Town Manager Brandon Robertson said, according to the newspaper. The electricity would be sold to Connecticut Light & Power or United Illuminating by the company that will install and manage the panels, Solar City, which would operate under a 15-year contract with the town.

The plan will need to be approved by the town Planning & Zoning Commission, and a structural engineer will need to check whether or not the roofs can handle the weight, Robertson said in the newspaper’s report.
