From 400 To 50: Less Radon Tests Available In Farmington Valley
The radon test kit distribution is for several towns, including Avon, Simsbury, Canton, Farmington, Granby and East Granby.
A planned distribution of radon test kits has fallen much shorter than expected, according to the Farmington Valley Health District.
At the start of December, The FVHD was expecting to have 400 plus test kits to distribut throughout member towns, which include Avon, Barkhamsted, Canton, Colebrook, East Granby, Farmington, Granby, Hartland, New Hartford and Simsbury.
"We will only be receiving 50 total kits. This is significantly less than the 400 tests we were originally told we would be getting," wrote FVHD Environmental Health Coordinator Patricia Gigliotti.
In addition, the FVHD had to cut back on the amount of sites in the district distributing the test kids for the gas, which is caused by the natural decomposition of uranium and can be carcinogenic.

• Canton Senior and Social Services - 40 Dyer Ave., Canton.
• Colebrook Senior and Community Center - 2 School House Road, Colebrook.
• East Granby Building Department - 9 Center St., East Granby.
• Granby Public Library - 15 North Granby Road, Granby.
The test kits are not limited to residents in towns hosting distribution sites, but, rather, residents of any member town.
"In picking these partners, we were focused on locations that are spread out geographically across the FVHD in order to capture as many residents as possible," Gigliotti said.
The tests were received Dec. 21 and should be available while supplies last. Earlier plans were to continue the distribution through March, but the distribution will only last as long as there are supplies.
These locations each received 10 test kits, Gigliotti said.
