Upcoming Avon Library Events Include Several on Civil Rights

The following events are part of the Changing America series of exhibits, programs and films that examine landmark events in American history from The Emancipation Proclamation, January 1, 1863 to the March in Washington, August 8, 1963. The Changing America project is hosted by the Avon Public Library November 1 through December 13. All events are free, no registration is required. The Avon Public Library is at 281 Country Club Road, Avon, CT 06001. Hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday 10:00 am to 8:30 pm, Wednesday 10:00 pm to 6:00 pm, Friday and Saturday, 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. Ongoing: Exhibit, “The Emancipation Proclamation, 1863 and the March on Washington, 1963. “ The first stop of a national traveling exhibit that visually highlights one hundred years of civil rights milestones from the Emancipation Proclamation to the March On Washington. Open during regular library hours, except when a program is scheduled, November 1 through December 13.

Ongoing: Exhibit, “Harlem Renaissance: A Dream Deferred.” Sights, sounds, and icons from 1920’s African American culture in New York. Open during regular library hours November 1 through December 13.

Saturday, 11/1, 1:00 pm Opening Event for Changing America exhibit featuring a talk by Dr. Matthew Warshauer, CCSU, on The Road Unfinished: From Emancipation to Civil Rights.

Monday, 11/3: 1:30 pm & 6:00 pm, film Screening: 42, rated PG-13, 128 minutes, part of the Changing America film series

Tuesday, 11/4, 7 pm, Civil Rights Legislation A to Z with Gary Garrison (talk)

Wednesday, 11/5, 4:15 pm, special book discussion for children, led by Suzanne Lancaster.

Thursday, 11/6, 1:30 pm & 6:00 pm, film screening: Josephine Baker Story, rated R, 130 minutes, part of the Changing America film series
