Volunteers Needed To Clear Avon Park Of Invasive Plants

AVON, CT — Volunteers are being sought for an invasive plant removal workday Thursday, Aug. 13, at the Fisher Meadows Rec Area, 800 Old Farms Road.

Avon Recreation & Parks is partnering with the Farmington River Watershed Association, Avon Land Trust and Eastern Connecticut State University botanist Dr. Bryan Connolly for the event, which begins at 3 p.m.

Volunteers will work to remove Japanese barberry, an invasive shrub that can crowd out native plants, reduce wildlife habitat, and affect forest health.

Organizers said the event will also allow participants to learn about invasive species management from local experts while helping maintain one of Avon's natural areas.

Volunteers of all experience levels are welcome. Registration information is available through the QR code on the event flyer.
