2023 Berlin High Grad Earns Scholarship From Water Providers

She plans on becoming a chemical engineer and hopes to make a difference ensuring clean water for all.

BERLIN, CT — A recent Berlin High School graduate and budding chemical engineer was awarded a scholarship from a statewide organization of water providers.

Molly Szczesniak, a 2023 graduate of BHS, was recently awarded a scholarship by the Connecticut Water Works Association (CWWA) and the CT Section of the American Water Works Association (AWWA).

Szczesniak, who plans to be a chemical engineer, was selected to receive the award in recognition of her outstanding academic achievement and interest in issues affecting the state’s water resources.

She said contaminated water is linked to various water-borne illnesses and her chosen field of study could help make a difference.

“By pursuing a career in chemical engineering, I can focus my research on ways to provide access to safe and clean water in some of the world’s most impoverished areas,” Szczesniak said.

“We are very pleased to present this scholarship to Molly to assist her in pursuing a career in the water sector,” said Daniel Lawrence, Aquarion Water Co., and president of CWWA. “As stewards of the state’s water resources, we are honored to recognize students like Molly who have demonstrated an appreciation for the importance of providing people with safe, high quality drinking water.

“There are many rewarding careers in water and environmental related professions which serve a vital role in protecting the state’s water resources and meeting the public health and safety needs of our communities,” Lawrence added.

The CWWA is a trade association of investor-owned, municipal, and regional water utilities dedicated to promoting and achieving effective state policies. CTAWWA is an association of more than 600 water industry professionals dedicated to the promotion of public health and welfare.
