Berlin OKs $4M For Water Line, Tank Repairs

BERLIN, CT— The Berlin Town Council earlier this month unanimously approved a $4 million bond ordinance to fund a new water line along the Berlin Turnpike and repairs to the Lamentation tank, while also advancing the project for required planning review.

During the discussion of the project on April 7, Berlin Water Control Manager Ray Jarema said a bid opening was scheduled for April 15.

He said the work will include installing a water line along the Berlin Turnpike and addressing corrosion in the Lamentation tank.

Jarema added that any funds awarded through the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund will be applied before bond proceeds are used.

Councilor Charles Paonessa moved the adoption of the ordinance, and the council approved the measure, 7–0.

In a separate but related action, Paonessa moved to refer the proposal to the Berlin Planning and Zoning Commission for an 8-24 review, a step required for municipal projects. Veach seconded.

The referral also passed unanimously, 7–0.

The PZC will conduct its 8-24 review, which determines if a municipal project falls within the guidelines of the town plan of conservation and development, before the project proceeds. It next meets on May 7.
