BERLIN, CT — All 24 Berlin businesses inspected during a recent undercover tobacco and electronic cigarette compliance operation passed, according to the Berlin Police Department Tuesday.
Police said the unannounced inspections were conducted Aug. 26 in conjunction with the Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services' Tobacco Prevention and Enforcement Program.
The checks were intended to determine whether local retailers were complying with state laws prohibiting the sale of tobacco products and electronic cigarettes to people under 21.
All 24 establishments inspected were found to be in compliance, police said.
State law requires tobacco retailers to check the photo identification of anyone who appears to be younger than 30 before selling that person tobacco products or electronic cigarettes, according to the department.

Tobacco retailers are licensed by the Connecticut Department of Revenue Services, and results involving noncompliant businesses can be referred to the agency for possible administrative action, police said.
