BERLIN, CT — Berlin police are stepping up enforcement after receiving numerous complaints about reckless operation of e-bikes, mopeds, scooters, dirt bikes, and bicycles on town roads.
The Berlin Police Department said officers increased directed patrols and enforcement this week in areas where residents reported unsafe riding.
During the past two months, police have addressed more than 15 documented incidents involving e-bikes, motorized bicycles, mopeds, dirt bikes, scooters, bicycles and similar vehicles, according to Deputy Police Chief Drew Gallupe.
Police said many of the incidents involved groups of riders or multiple people rather than individual operators.
Enforcement has included motor vehicle stops, arrests and warnings, as well as identifying juvenile riders and notifying their parents when appropriate.
Officers have also conducted targeted patrols in areas where violations have been reported or observed.
Police stressed that the effort is aimed at unsafe behavior rather than lawful use of the vehicles.
"The department's goal is not to discourage the lawful use of e-bikes or similar vehicles," police said in the Sept. 15 announcement. "Our focus is on reckless operation, traffic violations, and conduct that places riders, pedestrians, motorists, and the public at risk."
Police said directed enforcement will continue throughout Berlin and officers will take action when they observe violations.
The department also encouraged parents and guardians to discuss traffic laws, safe riding practices, and the potential consequences of reckless operation on public roads with younger riders.
