Berlin Council Reverses Obscure Tax Law
The council recently reversed a tax law that required landlords to bear responsibility for tenants' back taxes.

BERLIN, CT - The council recently approved a measure reversing a rarely used tax law, according to a Hartford Courant report. The ordinance stated that landlords could be blocked from gaining building and zoning permits, licenses and other government documentation if a property had any back taxes, regardless of who owed those taxes. This meant that if a tenant owed taxes, a landlord could be held responsible.
The council deemed the law unfair, stating that landlords should not be penalized for tenants' errors. The law was rarely invoked but the council felt it should be reversed anyway.
