Berlin Football Players Fare Well in Lineman Challenge

The Redcoats placed highly in both the team competition and individual events.

BERLIN, CT — Berlin High School’s football team placed third out of 33 teams in the 2016 Lineman Challenge Competition that took place July 23 at Sage Park.

Darien High School won the competition, and Southington High School came in second.

The challenge was comprised of nine different events, including a truck push, tire flip relay and bench press competition. Berlin placed first in both the Agility Team Event and the Crab Sled Relay.

“I’m very proud of our team and how they competed,” Berlin head coach Joe Aresimowicz said. “For a smaller school like Berlin to take third place out of 33 teams is incredible. It was a great day of competition that wouldn’t have been possible without the dedication of Coach Demko and our other assistant coaches.”

This year’s Lineman Challenge also included the inaugural Nick Zuk Memorial Top Lineman Competition, where participants were able to compete on an individual level. Nate Miller of Fairfield Prep took home the first place overall trophy. Berlin’s Malachi Burby won the individual agility course and Justin Plank of Darien won the individual bench press competition.

The Redcoats will be hosting a Redcoats Tackle Cancer Fundraiser at their first home game on Sept. 16, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Sage Park. All fans are encouraged to purchase a Redcoats Tackle Cancer T-shirt and wear it to the game. All proceeds from the fundraiser will benefit the Nick Zuk Memorial Scholarship Fund and Pediatric Cancer Research.
