Berlin May Make Clearing Snow The Law

The town council is considering a law that would require homeowners to remove snow around fire hydrants.

BERLIN, CT - The town council is discussing a new law that would require property owners to clear snow from around fire hydrants, according to the Hartford Courant. The law would penalize those not in compliance with a $100 fine.

The amendment would require clearance of sidewalks of ice and snow within 24 hours following accumulation. Town officials requested the ordinance because snow blocking fire hydrants results in firefighters having to do it themselves, thereby reducing response time.

The public will weigh in on the law at a hearing July 24. Read the full report in the Courant.
