Berlin Obituary: John Cullen, 73

Condolences to his family and friends.

John Joseph Eugene Cullen, 73, of Berlin, passed away on Monday, July 24, 2017 at the home of his son after a short illness. He was the beloved (devoted/awesome/wonderful) husband of Janice Lorine (DeMerchant) Cullen for 44 years.

John was born February 6, 1944 in Hartford to Eugene and Marie Cullen, residing in East Hartford until October 2000. John was a graduate of St. Mary's School and East Hartford High School. He went into the U.S. Army for six years where he was a 2nd Lieutenant followed by a 37-year career at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in East Hartford where he was a Paymaster in the Payroll Department.

John loved to travel the back roads of New England, enjoyed camping and boating, riding his bike and taking care of his home and yard. He was a gifted photographer with his own darkroom and had his camera with him most of his travels building up an impressive and varied collection. John even did wedding photography for people he knew.

He always had a smile on his face and a story to tell, and was an excellent neighbor and friend, always ready and willing to help anyone out with any kind of chores or situations.

John will also be dearly missed by his two children, Aaron John (and wife Jeannie) of Berlin, and Sheri Janice DiNatale of Norwich; grandchildren Brooke Elizabeth Manning and Luke Damien DiNatale; brothers Thomas Cullen of East Hartford, Eugene Cullen of Florida, and James Cullen (and wife Eileen) of Bethel; sisters Patricia Fliakos of West Hartford and Honora Futtner (and husband James) of South Windsor; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends and family are invited to call at the Newington Memorial Funeral Home, 20 Bonair Avenue, Newington on Saturday, July 29th from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., immediately followed by a funeral service at the funeral home. John will be laid to rest privately.
