Berlin Offers Summer Lifeguard Class

The first class is July 31.

BERLIN, CT — With summer in full swing comes the increased chance someone could come across a swimming-related emergency.

That's why the Berlin Parks and Recreation Department is offering a special American Red Cross lifeguarding class later this month.

Plus, graduates might just help out and patrol swimming areas in Berlin or area towns.

The class is for residents and non-residents.

Prerequisites for the course are you must be at least 15 years old; swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing; tread water 2 minutes using only feet and other swimming challenges.

Certificate earned includes lifeguarding/first aid/CPR/AED valid for two years.

Classes are from 9 a.m. to noon at Percival Pool, 20 Highland Ave.

The course will start July 31 for approximately 10 classes with Aug. 11 as a test/makeup date. Participants must attend every class.

The fee, which includes a resuscitation mask, is $155 for residents and $165 for nonresidents.

The Berlin Parks and Recreation Department is accepting registration on-line through WebTrac on the Town's website at www.berlinct.gov or in person at 230 Kensington Road, Berlin.
