Berlin Police Commissioner Resigns After Reported Racist Comments

Berlin Police Commissioner Bob Peters has resigned in response to allegations that he made racist comments.

BERLIN, CT - Police Commission Bob Peters resigned Tuesday following a published report that he made racist comments to residents, the Record-Journal reported. The Berlin police union released a statement characterizing Peters' comments "ugly and reprehensible."

The New Britain Herald reported that Peters was recorded telling residents that Berlin officers are taught to use fatal violence against African Americans. He also used offensive language against homosexuals and immigrants.

However, Peters denied making the remarks. The New Britain State Attorney's Office is investigating the incident, according to the Herald.

Mayor Mark Kaczynski said he considered the language to be out of character for Peters, the Record-Journal reported.
