Officers for the next five days are conducting exercises to prep for various school responses.

BERLIN, CT — Local police are training this week at a local middle school for a situation they hope never happens.

The Berlin Police Department late this morning said via social media they will be at McGee Middle School for the next five days training for various school responses.

"The Berlin Police Department is taking advantage of the summer break to conduct training in various school response exercises," wrote the Berlin PD vial Facebook.

Schools are always a target of enhanced safety measures given an uptick in mass shootings nationwide, especially as schools.

Berlin police said these exercises are "part of our ongoing efforts to stay current in how our officers respond to emergencies and protect our local school communities."
