Berlin Senior Housing Deal Gets Gift Of Time

Berlin Town Council has voted to extend its option to sell to the Berlin Housing Authority by three months to aid senior housing proposal.

BERLIN, CT — The local group looking to build affordable senior housing at the old Knights of Columbus property on Percival Avenue recently received the gift of time from the town council.

The Berlin Town Council unanimously voted 6-0 to extend the town's option agreement to sell 143 Percival Ave. to the Berlin Housing Authority so it can build a $34 million, 50-unit plus affordable senior citizen apartment complex.

The vote, which took place June 21, officially extends the town's option deal with the authority from June 30, the prior ending date, to Sept. 30.

It's hoped the move will allow the housing authority more time to finalize financing and planning for the complex.

Berlin Town Manager Arosha Jayawickrema said the move gives the authority "more time to secure funding and tighten things up," according to meeting minutes.

According to the meeting minutes, Berlin Housing Authority Chairman Joe Bajorski said financing for the project is expected to close July 25.

He said the option extension gives his organization time to "wrap these items up and, hopefully, move forward with construction shortly thereafter."
